Nothing beats a ride on the Shimanami Kaido cycling road. And that says it all in cycling paradise Japan. The ride is so delightful we ride it twice, once in each direction.

ITINERARY

1. Welcome to Onomichi !

Arriving in Onomichi. Stay in HOTEL CYCLE, the brand new and super hip hotel at the start of the Shimanami Kaido. Get the Giant rental bikes fitted.

2. Onomichi – Omishima – 40km

Ride to Fujimien Ryokan on Omishima Island, a delightful traditional Japanese ryokan with excellent seafood. 2 nights stay.

3. Omishima – Omishima – 77km

Ride til the end of the Shimanami Kaido and loop back to Omishima.
Murakami Suigun Museum on Oshima Island. Essentially a recently built museum dedicated to the pirates that used to plague the Inland Sea a few centuries ago.
Oyamazumi Shrine (founded 719, present structure from 1427). The real attraction is the shrine’s treasure house, which has an astonishing 80% of Japan’s most precious samurai weapons – both National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties.

4. Omishima – Onomichi – 40km

Ride back north to Onomichi.
Kojoji Temple near Setoda Port, with a 3-story pagoda dating back to 1403, a National Treasure
Kosanji Temple, a modern (1936) one noted for replicas of famous temple buildings from various parts of Japanese history
Ikuo Hirayama Museum, with artworks and sketches by the painter who is originally from the island.
Little detour to the Innoshima Flower Center.

5. Sayonara

After breakfast you don’t have to climb in the saddle any longer. Now you are freed from the chores of the road.
